Self Managed Super Fund Advice to take control of your future
Do you dream of having more control over your retirement savings but worry about managing it all yourself? Maybe you’ve thought about setting up a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) but feel overwhelmed by the complexity. You’re not alone.
Many Australians share the same concerns. What if I make a mistake? Will I have the time and knowledge to stay on top of things? Is it even worth the effort? These are common fears when thinking about an SMSF. But here’s the thing, with the right advice and support, an SMSF can be a powerful tool to shape the retirement you want.
When it comes to your retirement, you deserve more than just standard solutions. An SMSF gives you the freedom to choose where and how your money is invested. It’s your future, your way. But knowing where to start—and how to make sure you’re doing it right—is key to making the most of your opportunities.

You have the ability to invest in property, shares, or other assets that align with your personal financial goals. You can diversify your portfolio, tailor your strategy to fit your lifestyle.

Peter and Ann – Aged 54 and 53
SMSF advice in action
Steve and Debra
Steve is 55 years of age and has $1.2m in a State Government Super Fund. One of his colleagues told him he was able to roll it over to a Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF) even while still employed by the South Australian government. Steve and Debra want to invest some of his super into an investment property and want to know whether this is a good idea.
I discussed with Steve and Debra the pros and cons of having an SMSF as well as what was involved in setting up and administering the fund going forward. Given their goal is to invest in physical real estate, an SMSF achieves this goal. However, there are tax benefits associated with the State Government Super Fund and it may not be in their best interest to roll over to an SMSF. As part of the research in preparing my advice and recommended strategy I will need to compare the 2 strategies to determine this.
I identified that financially, though my projections, remaining invested in the State Government Super Fund would result in a higher balance at retirement (taking into account some assumptions about investment returns), but more tax payable upon rolling over to a pension. After considering this information, given their goal is to invest in physical real estate, they still wanted to set up an SMSF and invest 50% in property and have me manage the other 50% in a diversified portfolio of investments.
Adam and Jenny
Adam and Jenny are in their early thirties with a mortgage and young family and have already established an SMSF with a balance of approximately $200,000. The SMSF is invested in cash and they want to have a trusted person to make initial recommendations to invest the funds and then manage the portfolio on their behalf.
I discussed Adam and Jenny’s goals, obtained their current financial position and we completed the risk profile questionnaire to enable me to determine how to invest the available funds. I also identified that they didn’t have adequate personal insurance in place, if something were to happen to them with a mortgage and a young family and they agreed for me to provide recommendations for this.
My advice document outlined investment recommendations and personal insurance recommendations, using the SMSF to fund some of the insurance premiums so as not to impact their cash flow. I recommended establishing an ongoing advice arrangement where we would meet on an annual basis to review the SMSF and ensure the insurance cover is still suitable for them. I now manage the investment portfolio for them.
