Jacki helped us to overcome our fear of dealing with Centrelink and applying for the age pension by helping us every step of the way. She made sure Centrelink had everything they needed and eventually our application was finalised. We wouldn’t have done it without her, we would have kept putting it off. We are very grateful for the extra income we receive thanks to Jacki’s understanding of Centrelink’s processes.

Jim and Jenny – Aged 68 and 70

I meet with Jacki every year and for the last 5 years or so, I haven’t qualified for a part age pension. Since selling my investment property and spending some money on my home and travel Jacki worked out that I did now qualify and I receive a pension of $250 a fortnight which has meant I don’t need to draw as much from my super. Jacki helped me with my application and made sure Centrelink had all of the information they needed. I wouldn’t have known where to start so I am very pleased Jacki was able to help me with it all.

Jack – Aged 69

Centrelink financial advice in action

Jack

Jack is 70 years old and is an existing client who has previously been ineligible for the age pension because of an investment property and his assets being above the upper threshold. He has sold the property, paid the capital gains tax and spent some money on his home and travel.

Jack and I met for his annual review and in obtaining his current financial position, I determined Jack is now below the upper asset threshold and will qualify for a part age pension, which he was surprised by. I estimated that he would be entitled to approximately $250 per week or $6,500 per annum and therefore the age pension was worth applying for. I provided a Statement of Advice at our next meeting outlining the recommendations. The increased income from the age pension means Jack can reduce the amount he’s drawing from his super fund which will allow it to fund his requirements for a longer period of time.

I assisted Jack with his age pension application through his MyGov account and had given him a list of information we would need to upload. We completed everything and submitted his application and the date it was submitted was the date Centrelink will backdate the payment to, depending on how long they take to assess the application.  Within approximately three months Jack received the back payment amount and commenced receiving the age pension each fortnight.

Linda

Linda is 68 years old, has just retired and is currently renting a home.  She needed help setting up an income stream with her super which is estimated at approximately $110,000 and applying for the age pension. Linda tried to apply when she turned 67 and was very overwhelmed and gave up. She needs an income of around $38,000 per annum including rent.

I met with Linda and we discussed her goals and I obtained her current financial position, estimating that she will be eligible for the full age pension and rent assistance.  I indicated I would do some further research and projections to show her how long her superannuation will last. I also indicated I would be able to assist her to commence an income stream with her super and apply for the age pension.

I determined that Linda will be eligible for the full age pension and rent assistance and will need to draw just above the minimum of 5% of her account balances as an income stream. On this basis her superannuation should last well past her life expectancy. Linda was very relieved to know this, and have someone to assist her set everything up and take the worry away from her.
